The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is gearing up for its biggest and most exciting era yet: GEN4.

As part of this new chapter for the all-electric championship, a new sporting format will be introduced for the 2026/27 season, outlining a groundbreaking dual-race concept designed to push drivers, teams, and the brand-new GEN4 technology to their limits.

A new way of racing

For double-header race weekends, we’re changing things up. Rather than running identical races across a double-header weekend, teams will now have to master two entirely different tactical disciplines, shifting their setups to match the demands of each format.

Free Practice has been extended to 45 minutes, with two sessions taking place over a Formula E weekend. Qualifying follows, with the fan favourite ‘Duels’ format continuing into the GEN4 era.

Races will now be defined as either an ‘E-PrixUnleashed’ or an ‘E-Prix’, and will follow the below format:

E-PrixUnleashed

Designed for highlighting the raw speed of the GEN4, ‘E-PrixUnleashed’ is a 30-minute sprint race, which utilises the high downforce configuration of Formula E’s latest race car. This will provide drivers with more grip, allowing them to attack corners at greater speed and perform more audacious overtakes. ATTACK MODE will be condensed to a sharp 6-minute window to maximise wheel-to-wheel action.

E-Prix

In the 45-minute E-Prix, efficiency remains the key to success. In a massive aerodynamic shift, cars will pivot to a low-downforce setup, reducing drag to maximise energy management. The ATTACK MODE duration is extended to 8 minutes, and drivers will have to take a mandatory PIT BOOST stop.

This race format will take place at every race weekend, acting as the main event at single-header locations.

High stakes, high reward

The championship points system for races remains unchanged, with full points awarded equally for both race formats, following the traditional 25-to-1 scale for the top ten finishers.

However, in qualifying, the stakes have been raised. Starting from the 2026/27 season, drivers who reach the Duels stages will receive championship points, with the amount of points determined by their advancement through the Quarter and Semi Finals.
