The new Somerset gigafactory will be one of the largest in Europe, with a production capacity of 40GWh, and will provide batteries for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, as well as other manufacturers, from 2026.
Tata's £4bn investment which will see some 4,000 jobs created in the UK and thousands more across the supply chain, will also be subsidised by the UK government. The UK intends to ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and is working towards a series of net zero goals.

"With the global transition to zero emission vehicles well underway, this will help grow our economy by driving forward our lead in battery technology whilst creating as many as 4,000 jobs, and thousands more in the supply chain," said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The plant is the first Tata has committed to outside India and follows Envision's 6GWh plant in the North East. The investment is a welcome boost to the UK's EV industry, with 35 battery plants already open, under construction or planned in the EU.
