Nico Prost season review

Sixth place in the standings is a respectable return, but for a driver who’d challenged for the championship in Seasons 1 and 2, there can be no hiding from the fact that this was ultimately a disappointing campaign for Nico Prost.

His season started strongly with a trio of fourth-place finishes, with a podium place still in sight at the flag on all three occasions. But remarkably, that would be as close as Prost came to the top three in a season where his team-mate Sebastien Buemi won half the races…

The problems stemmed from qualifying, which was unexpected as this had been one of Prost’s strong suits over the first two seasons, with him famously grabbing pole position for the first two races.

But in Season 3 the opposite was true. There was just a single Super Pole appearance, which came in the penultimate race of the season in Montreal, and on four occasions he started outside of the top 10.

With the grid more competitive than ever, starting down the order meant his chances in the races were already compromised before the lights changed. Invariably he showed good racecraft and moved forward in the races and this allowed him to be the only driver to score at least a point in every round this season.

But a for a three-time race winner this was surely beneath his pre-season expectations.
