The A-Z of Formula E: E

The A-Z of Formula E: E

The FIA Formula E Championship is the world’s first all-electric single-seater racing series. But what do those words actually mean, how does the technology work, and who are the key players behind the scenes?

Read on to find out more…

E

e.dams

Established specifically for Formula E, e.dams is the latest venture from the ultra-successful DAMS team. Set up by Jean-Paul Driot in 1988, DAMS has established an enviable track record of success in junior single-seater racing. It claimed four teams’ and three drivers’ championships in F3000, the inaugural A1GP title with Team France, the Renault V6 Eurocup with Jose Maria Lopez, two GP2 Asia and three main series titles, and two Formula Renault 3.5 championships and a single Auto GP crown.

Since entering Formula E, e.dams has scored points in every single race, won both teams’ championships and the Season 2 drivers’ title.

EJ

EJ is Formula E’s resident in-house DJ, who keeps the crowds entertained with various sets of dance music in the eVillage throughout the day. He’s released a number of singles and can be found playing the global club scene when he’s not at the Formula E tracks.

EMOTION Club

The EMOTION Club is Formula E’s exclusive VIP hospitality centre, where guests have the ultimate all-electric race day experience. With exclusive driver and team interviews, fine dining and champagne on tap, it’s an experience to be savoured.

Energy

There is often confusion being what is meant by power and energy. In simple terms, the energy referred to in Formula E is expressed in Kilowatt hours, of which the spec battery has 28 kW/h. Like the fuel in the tank of a conventional car, the energy is consumed as the car is propelled forward. Energy management is one of the key skills of a Formula E driver, with the ability to go as fast as possible while consuming as little as you can the secret to executing a winning strategy.

Enel

Enel is the Official Energy Partner of Formula E and is helping Formula E in its aim to become carbon neutral by establishing a grid of sustainably sourced electricity.

Engel, Maro

Maro Engel joined the Venturi team for Season 3 and finished ninth on his debut in Hong Kong, the highest placed rookie. He made his first Super Pole appearance in Mexico, but started back in the field after penalties were applied.

eRace

At every event the Formula E drivers also race against each other on simulators. This is known as the eRace. Held in the eVillage, the eRace also includes the fastest fans from the weekend too, so make sure you get in line to set a time and you could be on live TV racing against your heroes!

eSports

The fastest growing sport in the world doesn’t take place on a pitch, well, not what you would conventionally call a pitch. eSports – aka professional computer gaming – is in the midst of a spectacular boom, with competitions selling out huge stadiums in hours, enormous prize funds offered up to the champions, and blue chip companies falling over themselves to get involved as sponsors.

Formula E has embraced eSports through its Visa Vegas eRace, where 10 of the best simulator racers in the world took on the 20 Formula E stars for a share of a million-dollar prize pot. Watch this space to see what Formula E does next in this exciting new type of racing…

Evans, Mitch

Mitch Evans made his Formula E debut at the start of Season 3 as part of Jaguar’s all-new race programme. The Kiwi was in the right place as the right time to benefit from a late crash in Mexico to score his first Formula E points. He recorded his and the team’s first Visa Fastest Lap in Berlin.

eVillage

The Allianz eVillage is Formula E’s fan zone. Featuring everything from the spectacular podium ceremony to the crowd-pleasing autograph session, there is always something to see and do, even if that is just to grab a coffee while your mobile phone recharges. With giant screens offering an amazing view of the race, the eVillage is a great place to experience the race if you are on a budget.
