The A-Z of Formula E: D

Racing, Jerome D’Ambrosio made the switch to Dragon Racing ahead of the first Formula E race and he’s been with the team ever since. His first win came in Season 1 at the Berlin ePrix after on-the-road winner Lucas di Grassi’s car failed post-race scrutineering.

 

Amazingly, his second race win came in near identical circumstances in the Season 2 race in Mexico. He took his maiden pole in Punta del Este in Season 2, and is one of only eight drivers to have started every Formula E race.

Dallara

Dallara builds the carbonfibre/aluminum chassis and survival cell for the Formula E car. Dallara is the single biggest manufacturer of racing cars in the world. As well as building the chassis for the Haas F1 racer, it also supplies cars to Indycar, GP2, GP3, F3, F4 and acts as a consultant on numerous other race car and road car projects.

De Silvestro, Simona

Simona de Silvestro will have a permanent place in Formula E history by virtue of being the first female driver to score points in the all-electric racing series. The Swiss star made her debut at the Season 1 finale in Battersea for the Andretti team, and did well enough to earn a full-time drive for Season 2.

Her breakthrough race came in Long Beach, where she finished a strong ninth to score two points. It was a result she repeated in Berlin later in the season.

Dev Bot

Dev Bot started life as an LMP3 sportscar that was taken over by Roborace and adapted to be a test mule for its fully-autonomous racing car technology.

Dev Bot made its public debut during pre-season testing at Donington Park, and ran at a Formula E race for the first time in Marrakesh. The technology trialled and developed in Dev Bot has been supplanted into Robocar, which will form the base for the world’s first driverless car series – Roborace.

DHL

DHL is the Official Logistics Partner of Formula E. Through its global network and knowledge of long haul delivery, DHL was able to help Formula E design a calendar that was as low-carbon as possible. This means that wherever possible air freight is avoided and sea, road or rail used instead. DHL is currently supporting the eChampions series, in which each Formula E team is nominated an unsung hero, whose endeavours are profiled in video. At the end of the season a winner is selected through a combination of a panel selection and public vote.

 

Di Grassi, Lucas

Lucas di Grassi made history when he became the first driver to win an FIA-sanctioned all-electric single-seater race with victory in the inaugural Beijing ePrix. That pretty much set the tone for the Brazilian’s Formula E career to date. He’s been a factor in almost every race, which has led him to standing on the podium more times than any other driver.

He’s been a contender for the title in each season too. He was third in Season 1, second in Season 2. Will it be third time lucky in Season 3?

DiCaprio, Leonardo

Oscar-winning Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio is a passionate advocate of environmentalism and supporter of Formula E’s brand of sustainable motorsport. In fact, he’s the Chairman of the Formula E Sustainability Committee and has paid a visit to the paddock at two ePrix.

Dillmann, Tom

The current Formula 3.5 V8 champion made his Formula E series debut midway through this season, standing in for Maro Engel at Venturi for the Paris ePrix. He did a good job too, scoring four points for eighth place. This earned him a permanent race seat for the remainder of the season.

Donington Park

In the lead up to the start of the championship, Formula E opened its operational headquarters at Donington Park – one of the most famous circuits in the UK and the home of the 1993 European Grand Prix. As well as providing a base for the spare parts and being the logistical hub for the series, 10 other garages were constructed at the site, giving all the teams a workshop where they could prepare their cars ahead of the first official testing programmes.

Testing kicked off on July 3, 2014 and Donington Park would remain the home of all Formula E pre-season group tests for the first three seasons. But although Formula E’s operations remain there, the majority of teams have now relocated, and a new venue is being sought for pre-season testing for Season 4 and beyond.

Dragon Racing

Jay Penske’s Dragon Racing outfit was the fourth team to commit to the FIA Formula E Championship. Established in 2006, Formula E represented its first foray into international motorsport away from its roots in Indycar. Jerome D’Ambrosio scored the team’s first win in Berlin, Season 1, and its maiden pole in Punta del Este, Season 2.

After being a customer user of the Venturi powertrain in Season 2, Dragon Racing entered into a partnership with the Faraday Future electric car company for Season 3 and became a powertrain manufacturer in its own right.

Driver parade

Ahead of every race, all the Formula E drivers take to the track for a lap on the back of an open-top electric truck. The gives them a chance to wave to the crowd in the grandstands and demonstrates Formula E's commitment to place fan engagement front and centre in all its activities.

DS Virgin Racing

With Alex Tai at the helm, Virgin Racing’s Formula E team was Sir Richard Branson’s second foray into the world of motorsport, following two seasons of running in Formula 1. Success came quickly, with Sam Bird winning at the second time of asking, Round 2 in Putrajaya.

For Season 2, Virgin sealed a partnership with DS – the luxury car division of the PSA group. Again it was Bird who delivered the opening laurels, with a well-earned win in Buenos Aires.

Duran, Salvador

Mexican racer Salvador Duran ended a stint of racing inactivity when he joined Team Aguri three races into Season 1. After shaking off his race rustiness, the former Daytona 24 Hours winner recorded a Formula E career best of sixth in Moscow.

For Season 2, he switched to the Trulli team, but when its Motomatica JT-01 failed to hit the track, he rejoined Aguri for a further three races, but there would be no more points.

Duval, Loic

The Le Mans 24 Hours winner and 2013 World Endurance Champion joined the Dragon Racing team for the Miami race in Season 1, and made an instant impression by scoring points on his debut.

A first podium finish followed in Berlin, but he’s still waiting for a maiden win.
